Rock Academy
The Rock Academy is a small, Christian primary school that has set itself a big goal. Although the school is located in a middle-class area of Cape Town, the underprivileged communities of Masiphumelele and Ocean View are only a few minutes’ drive away. Marked by poverty, unemployment, violence and drug-related crime, it is the children who suffer the most. The public primary schools in these parts of the city are overcrowded and poorly equipped, and often the same dangers are found in the schools as on the streets of the community. However, parents usually cannot afford to send their children to the public or private schools further away, where they would also come into contact with children and teachers from different economic backgrounds and, above all, with resources and opportunities for development. The cycle of poverty and lack of opportunities is repeated and the gap between rich and poor is constantly widening.
The Rock Academy is actively working to break this cycle. Children from all backgrounds are welcome to learn together and from each other, form friendships and grow together. The decisive factor here is the small ratio of learners to teachers and the friendly atmosphere in which the children feel at home.
In 2020, we were able to submit an application on behalf of the Rock Academy to BILD hilft e.V. „Ein Herz für Kinder” for classroom equipment and a large vehicle. The implementation was delayed until 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, but the joy was no less great when new musical instruments, laptops, storage cupboards and a 14-seater van were finally received. Everyday school life has now been enriched and we are happy to have been a waymaker for the Rock Academy in this way!
